Zdzislaw Beksinski: MASTER OF THE GRIMNESS / MAESTRO DE LA DESESPERACIÓN

Few artworks have lived to resemble the power of its author’s name. And the case of Zdzisław’s is remarkable.
Zdzisław Beksiński was one of the most notable painters of the twentieth century and, ironically, one of the most underrated ones as well. His extraordinary works involve surreal visions of nightmares, death and the unknown: Dystopian surrealism, according to some later critics. His images invite to explore the subconscious of the human mind and the fears lurking from every shadow.
Born in Sanok, Poland, on 24th February 1929. He graduated from Architecture and worked a few years in construction –both areas he did loathe so much–, to later explore more artistic areas such as photography, sculpture and, of course, painting. He was one of the first artists to experiment with art concept printing.
Zdzisław developed the strange behaviour of not attending his own exhibition openings, although he would agree to do any interview.
He mentioned being unable to create with the lack of music, stating something like “the silence would create in my mind a feeling of something is actually absent”
In spite of the grimness of his art, he was described to be a person rather pleasant with a sharp sense of humour.
1960-1980 was his golden period, raising his name to the top of the contemporary polish art. Thus leaving a rich collection of expressive paintings with a decaying-death theme.
The end of the '90s brought him nothing but tragedy, with his wife dying in 1998 and his son committing suicide one year later. Three days before his birthday, he was found dead in his flat in Warsaw, with 17 stab wounds bringing to an end his brilliant work and the beginning of a legend unknown.

Interesting facts:
- He worked at “Autosan” (Polish bus manufacturer) as a visual artist; responsible for bus design. Most of his designs never saw the production line
- He refused a scholarship from the Guggenheim museum in New York. Due to his unwillingness to move to a place further away than his own home. According to himself, he suffered from neurotic diarrhoea, and that’s it. Hence his reluctance to travel or leaving his place to a distance beyond considered safe.
- He was an IT devoted person, building a knowledge comparable to a qualified specialist.
- He called his own paintings hung at home as “domestic animals”
- He burned a huge selection of his works leaving no documentation on them. He alleged those works were way "too personal”, thus unwilling to show to the public.

Pocas obras de arte son fiel reflejo del nombre de su autor. Y para el caso de Zdzisław, esto es notable.
Zdzisław Beksiński fue uno de los pintores más destacados del siglo XX e, irónicamente, uno de los más subestimados. Sus obras extraordinarias incluyen visiones surrealistas de pesadillas, la muerte y lo desconocido: el surrealismo distópico, según algunos críticos. Sus imágenes invitan a explorar el subconsciente de la mente humana y los temores que acechan en cada sombra proyectada.
Nació en Sanok, Polonia, el 24 de febrero de 1929. Se graduó de Arquitectura y trabajó unos pocos años en la construcción -disciplinas que aborrecía-, para luego explorar áreas más artísticas como la fotografía, la escultura y, por supuesto, la pintura. Fue uno de los primeros artistas en experimentar con la impresión de arte conceptual.
Zdzisław desarrolló el extraño comportamiento de no asistir a las inauguraciones de sus exposiciones, aunque aceptaba realizar cualquier entrevista.
Mencionó ser incapaz de crear arte sin la presencia de la música, diciendo algo como "el silencio crearía en mi mente un sentimiento de que algo está ausente"
A pesar de lo lúgubre de su arte, el artista era descrito como una persona bastante agradable y con un agudo sentido del humor.
1960-1980 fue su período dorado, elevando su nombre a la cima del arte polaco contemporáneo. Dejando así una rica colección de pinturas expresivas con un sello particular de muerte y descomposición.
El final de los años 90 no le trajo más que tragedias: con su esposa muriendo en 1998 y su hijo suicidándose un año después.
Tres días antes de su cumpleaños, fue encontrado muerto en su apartamento en Varsovia, con 17 puñaladas que pusieron fin a su brillante trabajo y al comienzo de una leyenda desconocida para la mayoría.

Datos interesantes:
- Trabajó en “Autosan” (fabricante de autobuses polaco) como artista visual; Responsable de diseño de automóviles. La mayoría de sus diseños nunca vieron la línea de producción.
- Rechazó una beca del museo Guggenheim en Nueva York. Debido a su falta de voluntad para mudarse a un lugar más alejado que su propia casa. Según él mismo, padecía una diarrea neurótica. Esto explica la negativa a viajar o dejar su lugar a una distancia más lejana de lo que consideraba como segura.
- Era una persona muy aficionada a la informática, obteniendo un conocimiento comparable al de un especialista calificado.
- Describía a sus propios cuadros colgados en casa como "animales domésticos".
- Quemó una vasta selección de sus obras sin dejar documentación sobre ellas. Más tarde argumentó que esas obras eran "demasiado personales", por lo que no estaba dispuesto a mostrarlas al público.

the mysterious maiden // la dama misteriosa

Our moon is the most privileged witness of the evolution of all species. And, in direct comparison with our sun, she has been watching the sleep of the majority of nature's creatures, while few ones lurk bathed on her light -moonlight!
She has been adored for all civilisations but still does not want to reveal all her secrets, at least not to anyone alive.
So, I have wanted to describe some few facts of the moon, but of course from my lyrical perspective.

Nuestra luna es testigo privilegiada de la evolución de todas las especies. Y, en comparación directa con nuestro sol, ella ha estado protegiendo el sueño de la mayoría de las criaturas de la naturaleza, mientras que algunas acechan bañadas en su luz: ¡luz de luna!
Ha sido notablemente adorada por todas las civilizaciones, aunque aún rechaza compartir sus secretos, al menos con nadie que se encuentre vivo.
Entonces, he querido narrar datos curiosos de la luna, pero desde mi perspectiva lírica. Ahí vamos!

Pale face never blinded when facing the sun.
Between her arms, our mass decreases to the fifth and the problems, to emptiness's will.
If we gave ourselves naked to her, our blood would boil until becoming a halo in there.
It is not possible to whistle at her, neither sense it would make; she gazes at us despite any hemisphere we take,
as she dances in synchronised with the stability of our surrendered feet.
But she has intimated more times than the naiads from the ocean's depths; and, yet, nobody has managed to caress her back in bed.
She does not know the warmth of the breath, and of all the songs dedicated, she has never heard of anyone's fell
Though she is generous with us: providing the breeze, but also the hurricane.
The legends say at night men adore her, while in the day from the blue mantle she escapes, while a scorpion full of desires for shining awaits

Rostro pálido que nunca enceguece al enfrentar al sol.
Entre sus brazos, nuestra masa disminuye al quinto y los problemas al vacío.
Si nos entregásemos desnudos a ella, nuestra sangre herviría hasta transformarse en el recuerdo de un halo.
No es posible silbarle, y tampoco tendría sentido; nos sigue con su mirada en cualquier hemisferio que nos encontremos, ya que danza en sincronía con la estabilidad de nuestros pies rendidos.
Pero ella ha intimado más veces que las náyades que habitan las profundidades del océano; y, aún así, nadie ha logrado acariciarle la espalda.
Ella desconoce el calor del aliento, y de todas las canciones que le han dedicado, jamás alguna por sus jardines ha escuchado.
Sin embargo es generosa con nosotros: nos provee la brisa, pero también el huracán.
Las leyendas dicen que por las noches los hombres la adoran, mientras que por el día huye del manto azul, mientras un escorpión con deseos de brillar descansa bajo un frondoso abedul.

- Lucha con todas tus fuerzas. Nunca rendirse a las hordas de la flatulencia ni los soldados de caquita.
