The Jade Emperor - Supreme Ruler Of Heaven

This is one of the most important and popular figures in Chinese mythology and is an especially important Daoist deity. He is also known as Yuhuang Shangdi; Yudi or Lord Heaven. He governs the cosmos and resides in a magnificent palace in the highest part of heaven along with his large family and entourage of ministers and officials.

The god originated in ancient Chinese oral mythology but he was officially incorporated into the state-sponsored Chinese religion by Emperor Shenzong of the Song Dynasty after the emperor had claimed to have seen the god in a vision on a particular night in 1007 CE. The Jade Emperor should not be considered a creator god as in Chinese traditional religion no deity is involved in the Creation. Rather, it is believed that the universe came into existence from the union of matter (K‘i) and movement (Li) which, according to the principle of yin and yang, infinitely alternate to produce the five elements of metal, wood, water, fire and earth. Therefore, the supreme god is seen more as an anthropomorphic representation and guardian of morality.  
In his palace in heaven, the Jade Emperor lives with his wife the Jade Empress, Tianshang Shengmu or Mazu. Prominent members include his nephew Yang Shen, otherwise known as the Second Lord of Quality, Erlang Shen whose Celestial Dog - Tiangou - chases away evil spirits. One of the Jade Emperor’s secondary wives is the Horse Head goddess, who is believed to care for silkworms, producers of the precious Chinese commodity, silk. 
The Jade Emperor's court, with all of its specialized roles and social hierarchies, parallels the structure of ancient Chinese monarchies. His fairness, benevolence, and acts of mercy towards his subjects were meant to serve as an example of what real Chinese emperors should aspire to be like.
Even today, the Jade Emperor plays a significant role in Chinese life, especially around Chinese New Year. During the New Year, the Jade Emperor is said to judge the character of each individual and accordingly award them punishment or reward in the coming year based on their behavior in the previous one.
The Jade Emperor is said to have been a soldier named Zhang Denglai who fought in a bloody civil war during the Zhou Dynasty. During a particularly vicious battle, his entire battalion was wiped out. Denglai woke up in the afterlife to find his commander handing out honorary positions of the celestial court to his soldiers.
In Chinese art, the Jade Emperor is most often portrayed with long hair and moustaches and seated on a throne dressed in full imperial costume - the long, dragon-embroidered robe and mien (hat) with thirteen pearl-strung tassels - and holding the kuei or imperial ceremonial tablet.

Esta deidad es una de las figuras más importantes y populares de la mitología china. También se conoce  como Yuhuang Shangdi; Yudi o Lord Heaven. Se dice que gobierna el cosmos y reside en un magnífico palacio en la parte más alta del cielo junto con su numerosa familia más el séquito de ministros y funcionarios.
Este dios se originó en la antigua mitología china, pero el emperador Shenzong de la dinastía Song lo incorporó oficialmente a la religión local después de que el emperador afirmara haber visto a este dios en una visión durante una noche particular en 1007 CE. El Emperador de Jade no debe considerarse un dios creador, ya que en la religión tradicional china ninguna deidad está involucrada en la Creación. Más bien, se cree que el universo surgió de la unión de la materia (K'i) y el movimiento (Li) que, según el principio del yin y el yang, se alternan infinitamente para producir los cinco elementos de: metal, madera, agua, fuego y tierra. Por lo tanto, el dios supremo es visto más como una representación antropomórfica y guardián de la moral.
En su palacio en el cielo, el Emperador de Jade vive con su esposa, la Emperatriz de Jade, Tianshang Shengmu o Mazu. Entre los miembros destacados de su corte incluyen a su sobrino Yang Shen, también conocido como el Segundo Señor de la Calidad; Erlang Shen cuyo Perro Celestial - Tiangou - ahuyenta a los espíritus malignos. Incluso hoy, el Emperador de Jade desempeña un papel importante en la vida china, especialmente en torno al Año Nuevo chino. Durante esta festividad, se dice que el Emperador de Jade juzga el carácter de cada individuo y, en consecuencia, les otorga castigo o recompensa en el próximo año en función de su comportamiento del anterior.
También se dice que el Emperador de Jade fue un soldado llamado Zhang Denglai que luchó en una sangrienta guerra civil durante la dinastía Zhou. Durante una batalla particularmente cruel, todo su batallón fue aniquilado. Denglai se despertó en el más allá para encontrar a su comandante entregando posiciones honorarias de la corte celestial a sus soldados.
En el arte chino, el Emperador de Jade se retrata con mayor frecuencia con cabello largo y bigotes y se sienta en un trono vestido con un traje imperial completo: la túnica larga bordada con un dragón y el mien (sombrero) con trece borlas de perlas colgadas, y sostiene el kuei o tablilla ceremonial imperial.

Western journey
The journey to the West is one of the most legendary and popular myths in the Chinese canon. It follows the story of a humble Buddhist monk named Tang Sanzang who starts a journey from Southern China to India in order to bring back holy texts to help enlighten his countrymen.

In Journey to the West, the Jade Emperor is mostly involved in the chapters featuring the Monkey King, Sun Wukong. Wukong was once a member of the Jade Emperor's court but was thrown out of heaven and pinned underneath a mountain for 500 years for defying the Emperor's authority. Whereas Wukong is the epitome of jealousy, impatience, and bitterness, the Jade Emperor is a model example of kindness, compassion, and wisdom. After repenting and serving as Sanzang's disciple, Wukong achieves Buddhahood and is accepted back into the Jade Emperor's court.

Viaje occidental
El viaje occidental es uno de los mitos más legendarios y populares del canon chino. Sigue la historia de un humilde monje budista llamado Tang Sanzang que comienza su viaje desde el sur de China hasta la India para traer los textos sagrados para ayudar a iluminar a sus propios compatriotas.

En esta aventura, el Emperador de Jade participa principalmente en los capítulos que representan al Rey Mono - Sun Wukong. Wukong – que fue alguna vez miembro de la corte del Emperador de Jade, pero fue arrojado del cielo y atrapado debajo de una montaña durante 500 años por desafiar la autoridad del mismo Emperador. Mientras que Wukong es el epítome de los celos, la impaciencia y la amargura; el Emperador de Jade es un ejemplo modelo de la bondad, compasión y sabiduría. Entonces, después de arrepentirse y servir como discípulo de Sanzang, Wukong logra la iluminación y es aceptado nuevamente en la corte del Emperador de Jade.

The Zodiac Animals
One day, the Jade Emperor sent a letter to all the animals in his earthly kingdom letting them know that they were invited to meet him at his palace. The animals that would show up were going to be named honorary members of the zodiac.
The Cat, knowing he was the most handsome of them all, was sure that he was guaranteed a spot. However, he was also very lazy and loved to sleep in. The Cat asked his friend, the Rat, to wake him up when it was time to go to the Jade Emperor's palace.
The Rat hadn't been invited to the Jade Emperor's palace and knew that he didn't have a chance of getting a spot in the zodiac since people were disgusted just by his presence. So, he decided that he wouldn't wake the Cat up. Instead, he would just go in his place.
When the Cat woke up the next morning, he yawned and stretched his legs and suddenly realized that it was already well into the afternoon. He looked around for the Rat to ask him why he hadn't woken him up and saw him strolling happily through the streets. The Cat was so angry at the Rat's betrayal that he wanted to kill him and started to chase after him. That's why it's said that cats hunt rats even to this day.

Un día, el Emperador de Jade envió una carta a todos los animales en su reino terrenal para informarles que han sido convocados a su palacio. Los animales que apareciesen serían nombrados miembros honorarios del zodiaco.
El Gato, sabiendo que era el más grácil de todos, estaba seguro de que tenía un lugar garantizado. Sin embargo, también era muy proclive a la ociosidad y le encantaba dormir. Entonces, el Gato le pidió a su amigo, la Rata, que lo despertara cuando llegara el momento de ir al palacio del Emperador de Jade.
La Rata no había sido invitada al palacio del Emperador de Jade y sabía que no tenía ninguna posibilidad de obtener un lugar en el zodiaco ya que la gente siempre mostraba asco ante su presencia. Entonces, decidió que no despertaría al Gato e iría en su lugar.
Cuando el gato se despertó a la mañana siguiente, bostezó y estiró las piernas y de repente se dio cuenta de que ya había pasado ya toda la tarde. Miró a su alrededor buscando a la Rata para preguntarle por qué no lo había despertado y lo vio pasear alegremente por las calles. El Gato estaba tan enojado con la traición de la Rata que quiso matarle y comenzó a perseguirle desde entonces; por ende el hecho de que los gatos persiguen a las ratas hasta el día de hoy.
