​This romantic English painter was born in July 1789, in Haydon Bridge, UK.  He was celebrated for the dramatic paintings where Martin will populate them with fantastic figures winding up on menacing landscapes to impose a rich and melodramatic storytelling in all his artworks.
He was apprenticed by his father to a coachbuilder in Newcastle upon Tyne to learn heraldic painting, but the idea was later cancelled, and he was placed instead under Boniface Musso, an Italian artist, father of the enamel painter Charles Muss.  Master and apprentice moved from Newcastle to London in 1806, where he supported himself by giving drawing lessons, and by painting in watercolours, Chinese ink and glass —his only surviving painted plate is now in a private collection in England.  During his free time, the artist would concentrate in the study of perspective and architecture.
Martin sent his first oil painting to the Royal Academy in 1810, but it was not displayed. A year later, he would send the same painting once again, when it was hung under the title A landscape Composition. Thereafter, he produced a succession of large exhibited oil paintings: some landscapes, but more usually grand biblical themes inspired by the Old Testament. His landscapes have the ruggedness of the Northumberland crags, while some authors claim that his apocalyptic canvasses, such as - The Destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah -, show his familiarity with the forges and ironworks of the Tyne Valley and display his intimate knowledge of the Old Testament.

Este romántico pintor inglés nació en julio de 1789, en Haydon Bridge, Reino Unido. Y fue célebre por sus pinturas melodramáticas donde Martin las poblaría con figuras fantásticas que terminaban dentro de paisajes amenazantes para imponer una narrativa potente en todas sus obras de arte.
Su padre encargó a un fabricante de carrozas en Newcastle upon Tyne que enseñara la pintura heráldica a su hijo, pero la idea no progresó; entonces el joven John fue puesto bajo tutela de Boniface Musso, un artista italiano, padre del pintor de esmalte Charles Muss.  Maestro y aprendiz se mudaron desde Newcastle hacia Londres en 1806, donde Martin trabajaría dando clases de dibujo y pintando con acuarelas, tinta china y vidrio: - el único plato pintado sobreviviente se encuentra ahora en una colección privada en Inglaterra-. Durante su tiempo libre, el artista se concentraría en el estudio de la perspectiva y la arquitectura.
Martin envió su primera pintura al óleo a la Real Academia en 1810, pero ésta no se exhibió. Un año después, enviaría la misma pintura otra vez, logrando ser colgada bajo el título de A Landscape Composition. A partir de entonces, produjo una sucesión de grandes pinturas al óleo con temas bíblicos inspirados en el Antiguo Testamento. Sus paisajes tienen la robustez de los riscos de Northumberland, mientras que algunos autores afirman que sus lienzos apocalípticos, como - La destrucción de Sodoma y Gomorra -, muestran su familiaridad con la herrería del valle de Tyne y también su conocimiento íntimo del antiguo testamento.

In the years of the Regency from 1812 onwards there was a fashion for such ‘sublime’ paintings. Martin's first break came at the end of a season at the Royal Academy, where his first major sublime canvas - Sadak in Search of the Waters of Oblivion - had been hung but then ignored. He brought it home, only to find there a visiting card from William Manning MP, who wanted to buy it from him. Patronage propelled Martin's career.

El primer éxito de Martin llegó al final de una temporada en la Royal Academy, donde colgaron su primer lienzo sublime: - Sadak en busca de las aguas del olvido -, pero luego lo ignoraron.  Martin lo trajo a casa cuando encontró la de visita de William Manning MP, que deseaba comprar el cuadro. Este patrocinio impulsó totalmente la carrera de Martin.

This promising career was interrupted by the deaths of his father, mother, grandmother and young son in a single year. Another distraction was William -his eldest brother who was an inventor- frequently asking him to draw up plans for his inventions, and whom he always indulged with help and money. In 1816 Martin finally achieved public acclaim with –Joshua Commanding the Sun to Stand Still upon Gibeon -, even though it broke many of the conventional rules of composition.
Martin from about 1827 to 1828 had turned away from painting and became more involved with engineering plans and inventions. He developed a fascination with solving London's water and sewage problems, involving the creation of the Thames embankment, containing a central drainage system. His plans were visionary and formed the basis for later engineers' designs.
During the last four years of his life, Martin was engaged in a trilogy of large paintings of biblical subjects. However, a stroke which paralysed his right side was the announcement of his life ending, which finally happened on 17 February 1854, on the Isle of Man. He is buried in Kirk Braddan cemetery

La prometedora carrera de John Marin fue interrumpida por la trágica muerte de su padre, madre, abuela y su propio hijo en sólo un año. Otro inconveniente era William -su hermano mayor que era un inventor-, que con frecuencia le pedía que elaborara dibujos para sus inventos, y a quien siempre le otorgaba sumas de dinero. En 1816, Martin finalmente logró el reconocimiento público con –Joshua Commanding the Sun to Stand Still on Gibeon–, a pesar de que la pintura rompía con muchas de las reglas convencionales de composición.
Martin, entre 1827 y 1828, había dejado de pintar y se involucró en la planificación de ingeniería y bosquejos de invenciones. Desarrolló una fascinación por resolver los problemas de agua potable y alcantarillado que sufría Londres, lo que implicaría la creación del terraplén del Támesis, que contenía un sistema de drenaje central. Sus planes fueron visionarios y formaron la base para diseños posteriores de ingeniería.
Durante los últimos cuatro años de su vida, Martin participó en una trilogía de grandes pinturas de temas bíblicos. Sin embargo, un derrame cerebral que paralizó su lado derecho fue el anuncio del final de su vida, que finalmente ocurrió el 17 de febrero de 1854, en la Isla de Man.  El artista fue sepultad en el cementerio de Kirk Braddan.
